Quick video of screenprinting process

Screen printing, also known as silkscreen printing, is a versatile and popular printing technique used for creating various types of designs on a wide range of surfaces, including fabric, paper, glass, metal, and more. One common method within silkscreen printing that utilises photo emulsion is known as the "photo emulsion process." This method allows for the precise reproduction of intricate designs, photographs, and fine details.

Steps in Silkscreen Printing Using Photo Emulsion:

  1. Coating the Screen : The screen is thoroughly cleaned and degreased to ensure proper adhesion of the photo emulsion. A thin, even layer of photo emulsion is applied to one side of the screen, typically using a scoop coater. The coated screen is allowed to dry in a dark area away from any light source. The emulsion dries to a light-sensitive, but water-soluble, state.

  2. Preparing the Design : The design is either printed onto a transparent film (like vellum or acetate) or created digitally. If using a physical design, it is placed on a light table or securely aligned with the coated screen.

  3. Exposure : The screen with the dried emulsion is positioned in the exposure unit. The design (either the physical transparency or digital design) is placed on top of the screen. The exposure unit is turned on to expose the screen to UV light. The light hardens the emulsion in areas not covered by the design.

  4. Rinsing : After exposure, the screen is carefully rinsed with water. The emulsion in the exposed areas remains hardened, creating a stencil, while the unexposed emulsion is washed away.

  5. Printing : The prepared screen is mounted on a printing press. Ink is applied to the screen, and a squeegee is used to force the ink through the open areas of the stencil (the design) onto the desired surface (e.g., fabric, paper).

  6. Drying and Curing : The printed material is allowed to dry and, if necessary, undergoes a curing process (e.g., heat-setting) to make the ink permanent.
